After my forest article (link >>>), with his mention also on instagram @decoriastudio_interiordesign, I come back to you with the next dose of sensitive to beauty. Who of you have, who of you dream about cozy living room, tasteful kitchen, comfortable bathroom? The coziness, taste and comfort are largely give the nature, that is natural wood. Wood in interior design has different application, including wooden floor, wooden beams on the ceiling, wooden door, wooden table, wooden table top, ect. We love wood, we feel good in it surroundings, we invite it to our interior. Currently however, following statements of many designers and contractors, we try not use the wood in places exposed to high humidity and flooding. And as we know, places such as: kitchen floor, bathroom floor, case of toilet in the bathroom, kitchen tabletop, kitchen cupboards, kitchen strips, kitchen table, dining table, etc. are mainly exposed to flooding. Writing this article in accordance with my style and approach to design, I would like to greatly encourage you break these standards and rules. For me, wood is a wonderful element of nature, which over the years becomes more and more beautiful and valuable. Don’t be afraid of scratches on it, cracks, that show during it’s using and aging. It is a beauty in itself, that gives an atmosphere to the interior. I would like to encourage you to such interior design, design in harmony with nature.
I am currently reading a valuable book, among other for Artists, Designers, which describes a style based on the acceptance of aging and passing of everything around. This applies so much to natural materials such as wood. This style is called Wabi-Sabi, and the book is called “Wabi-Sabi for Artists, Designers, Poets, Philosophers” by Leonard Koren. In this article, I would like to emphasize, that wood, which ages and deteriorates is perfectly fine. We really do not have to be afraid of this passing away, and we do not have to be afraid to prevent it. Let him live his life. I will share the exact knowledge about Wabi-Sabi style in the next article, and now I invite you to view photos taken by me and my inspirations from the internet, which show where and how natural wood is used in the interior.
Take a look, how using of wood ages and deteriorates by different weather conditions. Looking for inspirations, I came across my favourite colors of nature: white, cream, blue, and precisely with wood “scratched by time”. For me, it is a sublime beauty in itself, the passing, that creates such beautiful patterns.
Therefore, I am a huge follower of designing a wooden floor in the bathroom, a wooden floor in the living room, and a wooden case of toilet. In general, you are probably afraid, that these places (especially in the bathroom) will be often flooded with water. In fact, how often are they exposed to water? In my opinion, we wipe the bathroom floor or the wall next to the geberit with a wet cloth as often as or as rarely as the floor in the living room. In addition, we now have available wide selection of good quality cleaning products, and we shouldn’t be too concerned about that. So let’s enjoy the beauty of nature also in these places :).
We know, that wood creates a unique atmosphere in the interior. If we have wood in our house or apartment, we know, that it immediately adds coziness to our space. Wooden beams are so desirable and we want to make these structures visible. But why? Because they are natural, very often unequal, cracked, scratched.. Surrounded by other wooden elements, such as a wooden table, wooden floor, wooden chairs, wooden doors, etc., they complete the entire space, creating the so-called “the cherry on the cake”. In my opinion, everything is designed together with taste and the view gives a pleasant relaxation. Do you feel it like that?
I will stop at the wooden door for a moment. I know, that there is an increasing selection of them on the market, from plywood, plastic, metal, steel, to wooden ones (those in the new edition). Sometimes however, and even more often than not, it is worth finding, restoring, slightly renewing these old wooden doors and reusing them in the interior design, and next in your home or apartment. I guarantee you, that they will work well not only in rustic, vintage or post-industrial interiors, but also in more minimalist, modern ones, where they will constitute a rustic, distinctive addition. I can assure you, that both you and your guests will not pass by without noticing them. Below, I present my inspirations as just a “seed” for the use of this type of door.
Mentioning of the door, I would like to share with you for a moment my nice meeting with the interior at the restaurant Ucieranie Treści, which is located in the post-industrial Pruszków near Warsaw. I was there to arrange the tables as a decorator. I came across this door and the next, and was staring at the whole post-industrial interior. Take a look at how you can in an interesting way adapt the old, crumbling door (here without even a handle) and other ones, that are already in better condition and that also beautifully fit into this style and atmosphere. I know that it is not a living room, kitchen or bathroom, but with this example I wanted to show you that you can adapt (probably even for many people to throw away) such a door. In my opinion, they age beautifully .. and deserve to be appreciated :).
When I write about wood, my inspirations cannot be without a wooden table, a wooden table with chairs or a wooden coffee table. I mean, such tables made of solid wood, which are not made of perfectly grinded wood, but the one with knots, cavities, irregularities, cracks, scratches, and dents. Such tables fit perfectly into my preferred styles: hygge style or wabi-sabi style, but it does not mean, that they will not fit in different style. On the contrary! Natural wood will be found everywhere and will always be a unique, distinctive addition.
I would like to also discuss wood in the kitchen, and more precisely, a kitchen wooden tabletop, kitchen wooden cupboards or wooden strips. I know that many of you are wondering whether to choose a wooden tabletop or not. Eventually, most of us will choose a material other than wood, it is more durable, non-scratching, non-discolouring, non-deforming, which is therefore not problematic. However, I do not want to criticize concrete, quartz, conglomerate or stone tabletops, because they are also beautiful materials (then you can design kitchen wooden cupboards in an interesting way). Coming back to wooden tabletops, in my opinion, do not be afraid to use them, because each scratch, dent or discoloration is the result of aging, which adds charm, not ugliness. In addition, we now have many good quality preparations for impregnation and protection of wood on the market. They will take care of the wood, that will serve us for many years to come.
I will show you the wooden strips in my kitchen. These are natural oak strips, that are the finishing for the kitchen tabletop. A piece of them is even next to the sink, from which water really often pours, sometimes splashing to sides. It has been several years since these strips were laid. I will write honestly, that although they darkened a little, they still work and look good. I love their imperfection and beauty, and they are naturally oak :).
So I encourage you to break certain standards. Use an interior designer, who will make your interior, living room, kitchen or bathroom a pleasant and cozy space, that they will have a taste and atmosphere. Because THIS is, what will make, we rest, we have power and energy for each next day :).
So I invite you to my place :). I will take care of your space, designing it in a cozy way :). You can find my offer here at the link >>>.
